Interdisciplinary Frameworks for Behavioral Transitions from On-Street to Underground Parking
Abstract: This interdisciplinary Activity Group examines how urban parking can transition from surface streets to underground facilities to enhance “living street” resilience and overall infrastructure efficiency. Our focus is on identifying the psychological and physical “friction gaps”—such as safety, access, and lighting—that prevent drivers from choosing off-street underground garages over on-street spots. We integrate structural and environmental subterranean sensing with travel demand modeling to evaluate the surface-subsurface dividend, quantifying how reclaiming street space unlocks urban well-being and improves traffic flow.
Through virtual working sessions, expert workshops, and collaborative modeling, participants engage in structured synthesis and comparative analysis, drawing insights from subterranean engineering, behavioral science, and municipal planning. This group provides an open platform for dialogue, interdisciplinary research, and strategic collaboration across the entire network. While designed for cross-disciplinary researchers and practitioners, we maintain an open-door policy for all registered network members. Join us in bridging underground sensing with surface mobility to reshape the future of urban streets.
