Urban Heat Mitigation through Underground Space: Integrating Geoenergy and Smart Infrastructure
This Activity Group addresses the escalating challenge of Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects by positioning underground space as a vital climate adaptation tool. By integrating shallow geothermal technologies with multifunctional infrastructure—such as tunnels, utility corridors, and energy geostructures—the group develops innovative solutions to reduce surface heat stress and bolster urban resilience. Beyond heat mitigation, we explore the integration of urban data centers and the strategic role of underground space in supporting AI infrastructure. Our work will culminate in a co-authored perspective paper and a collaborative funding proposal to be submitted to a chosen agency, such as the NSF, DOE or DoD, foundation or company.
